Bali is one of my favorite places in the world. I spent many months living in Bali during the pandemic and it was for a lack of better wording, paradise on Earth. One of the main reasons Bali was such a special place to live in was the plethora of beautiful cafes all over the island. While I mainly stayed in the, Canggu, Berawa, and Pererenan areas, I took plenty of visits to Ubud as it made for the perfect weekend getaway.
If you’re planning to also come and stay long term in Bali, make sure to read why I love living on the Island of the Gods and please for the love of all that is holy, do not just stay in Canggu or Ubud and be a bum the entire time. Bali has the most cafes of anywhere in the world.
I firmly believe that the Canggu area of Bali has the highest concentration of beautiful cafes per capita of anywhere in the world. Yes, I absolutely believe this to be true and if you disagree, please provide me with another place that has more and I will gladly go! Ubud is also the other hotspot within Bali that is home to just as many cafes.
There are so many cafes in Bali that after many months of living there, I still haven’t managed to visit them all. In addition, the are always new cafes opening throughout the island so I apologize if I don’t have the latest and greatest on this list. Please leave a comment if I am missing a place!
There are more cafes in Canggu than in Ubud
While Ubud has no shortage of amazing restaurants and cafes, Canggu is without a doubt the hotspot for all cafes in Bali. The concentration of cafes in that area is absurd with plenty of places to enjoy your avocado toast or be a digital nomad. I wrote about the best cafes in Canggu to work from. This list had all my favorite cafes with beautiful and open interiors perfect for being a digital nomad. This list will focus on just the best cafes to drink coffee, and eat breakfast at.
Many of the cafes in Ubud are actually outlets of cafes that exist in Canggu. As these are two of the most popular areas in Bali, it only makes sense that successful cafe franchises in Canggu would expand their business to Ubud. Of course, there are plenty of cafes that are only unique to Ubud, especially the ones of the vegan variety.
By no means is this cafe list of Ubud the complete list. These are just some of my personal favorites that I enjoy coffee and to work from as a digital nomad.
What are the prices of coffee and brunch in Bali?
Bali is not an expensive place when it comes to food and eating out. As I’ve written in my blog post how much does it cost for me to live in Bali, dining out is a significant portion of the budget but not a large absolute number. Of course each cafe will have a different price structure but you can expect to pay roughy the following:
- Espresso: 15k – 30k IDR
- Cappuccino: 20k – 35k IDR
- Flat White: 25k – 40k IDR
- Smoothie Bowl: 50k – 80k IDR
- Omelet: 50k – 80k IDR
- Pancakes or waffles: 50k – 90k IDR
Coffee is abundant in Bali
Coffee is abundant in Bali. Indonesia is one of the largest coffee producing regions in the world so you can expect to have the highest quality of coffee beans here. In fact, if you travel 1.5h north by scooter, you can visit the beautiful Munduk Moding Plantation where they grow their own coffee along with absolutely stunning views of the Pacific.
The coffee culture is very prevalent in Bali for decades now. Plenty of Australian baristas have set up shop in Bali and the quality of the roast you can expect in many places on the island is superb. Of course, not every place is created equal so this list will hopefully point you in the right direction!
BGS Ubud
BGS cafe is an institution in the Bali cafe scene. They have their famous branch in Canggu which is the popular hotspots with surfers and digital nomads alike. BGS is my go to spot in Ubud for some of the best coffee you can find in Bali. Their space is modern and Scandinavian chic but blends in with the Bali surroundings.
BGS also has an outdoor elevated seating area where you can see people lounging about enjoying their coffees. There’s no food at BGS except for basic pastries so do not come here for coffee and food.

Milk and Madu
Milk and Madu is another Bali staple with multiple locations throughout Canggu. Milk and Madu occupies one of the most central locations in Ubud being right in the city center away nearby to the main temple. It’s so central in fact, that there are no places to park your scooter which is a bit annoying.
This cafe is very beautiful decorated with high ceilings and floor to ceiling windows. The space is super inviting and a perfect place to get work done in the morning. Owing to its central location, it does get rather busy so make sure to not hog up too much space. As you can expect, the food is always good at Milk and Madu with some of the best smoothie bowls you’ll find on the island.

Suka Espresso Ubud
Suka is another Bali institution with numerous locations in Canggu, Uluwatu, and Ubud. The Suka location in Ubud is located in the city center in the middle of all the action. The dual level cafe is the perfect place to lounge about enjoying your morning coffee. The food menu at Suka is always great although this location does not have the same wood fired oven as its larger locations in Canggu. Nevertheless, I came here on numerous occasions especially as it’s close to so many other spots in Ubud.

Home Cafe Ubud
Home Cafe is another popular cafe chain throughout Bali. Their namestay location on the shortcut in Canggu was a place I loved to frequent. This Russian themed cafe has two outlets in Ubud; one in the city center and one slightly outside of the city center. Both locations have beautiful Bali-esque interiors that are perfect for brunching with a group or getting work done by yourself.
Home also has syrniki which are very traditional Eastern European cottage cheese pancakes. There are a few cafes in Bali that serve this as the Russian/Ukrainian community is quite strong here. I didn’t find the syrniki particularly impressive at Home Cafe (especially for the price) and much preferred the syrniki at Cinta or Huge in Canggu.
Nevertheless, Home is a great cafe nonetheless with an amazing ambiance.

Huma Cafe By Goldmine
Huma is the ultimate Ubud cafe. It’s located about 15 minutes outside of the main Ubud town in the middle of the rice fields. This is the quintessential Bali style cafe set in one of the most picturesque parts of Ubud. The outdoor cafe is surrounded by rice fields which allows for some of the best pictures and views you can imagine.
I came here only once during the afternoon and was really blown away by the views. While it doesn’t have the crazy rice terraces of nearby Tegalalang, there is also no mass tourism here to contend with. You simply have this cafe, and rice terraces around you which makes it much easier to enjoy. The only better cafe with a view is in the Jatiluwih rice terraces in the north.
Sadly, this cafe only opens at 8am which is long after the sunrise. I wish this place could open earlier as the morning hours around the rice terraces are magical.

Keliki Coffee
This is one of my favorite cafes in Ubud for the most quintessential view. Like Huma by Goldmine cafe, this cafe offers incredible views but instead of rice terraces, it offers you the Bali jungle. It’s also located on a ridge so you have views of the jungle below you. The cafe is small but makes up for it with comfortable bar chairs that face the jungle.
I loved coming here for my morning coffee and juice to start off the day. There are also plenty of plugs and space here to get a little bit of work done as a digital nomad.

Sayuri Healing Food
Sayuri Healing Food is the ultimate vegan hangout in Ubud. It’s a bit of an institution in Bali and you can expect to find all the vegans in Bali hanging out at this joint. There’s ample space at this cafe inside and outside for you to spread out and watch the crowd. I typically only come here for coffee and their vegan desserts. I didn’t even know what a raw vegan dessert was until I came to Sayuri healing food.
Safe to say, I’m a big fan of vegan desserts and almost prefer it to traditional desserts.

Zest Cafe
Zest is one of the most famous if not most famous cafe in all of Ubud. It’s an institution and a beacon for vegans around the world. This super eclectic cafe serves vegan only food in a quintessential Ubudian setting. Think no shoes, trees protruding through the interior, rattan all over, and some of the best vegan food you’ll ever have. You’ll also find a very diverse group of people here ranging from the typical Ubud yoga crowd, spiritual and/or vegan folks, digital nomads, tourists, and everything in between.
I’m not a vegan by any means, but I regularly come to Zest for vegan desserts. While I’m not team vegan for my main meals, I am team vegan for all things desserts. Their passionfruit cheesecake is addicting and among the most delicious I’ve had.

Alchemy
Another vegan restaurant makes this list because when in Rome am I right? Alchemy is located across the street from BGS and has a beautiful interior with more rattan than you can handle. This vegan restaurant has an extensive menu of things like vegan pancakes, vegan bacon, and more. There’s plenty of space in this cafe to stretch out and lounge around as well making it a perfect place to get work done as a digital nomad.
I only came here for the coffee which was tasty as I am not vegan by any means. Nevertheless, you’re in Ubud so sometimes you just gotta eat some vegan stuff.

Rusters Cafe
Rusters is one of my favorite cafes in Ubud. They’re located away from the main Ubud center which means you don’t have to deal with the horrendous traffic throughout the day. Rusters is located in front of rice fields so the views absolutely is one of the main draws of this cafe. Rusters also is home to a cafe/restaurant as well as a bakery. Both offer ample space for you to enjoy a coffee or get work done.
From their cafe, there are wonderful views of the rice fields which is the perfect way to start off your morning. Rusters is also a great place to come for sunset as the outdoor deck faces west. You can witness the stunning sunsets set over the palm trees resting on the rice fields.
