Eating Down Under: The Best Cafes to Work at in Sydney, Australia

Sydney, a city of sun, sea sand, and shopping, the city is known for its iconic attractions like the Sydney Opera House and The Sydney Harbor. During the day, Sydney also has plenty to do and plenty of cafes.

Work-life balance in Sydney is regarded to be one of the best in the world, according to many internet blogs. Sydney is also home to accessible infrastructure, remote workers, and well-designed co-working spaces that make the cafes attractive to many.

Sydney’s lively nightlife culture also is a perfect accompaniment to after-work. The city is filled with bars, nightclubs, and casinos.  For tourists, the nightlife keeps it adventurous as do the late-night casinos, which are very accessible to the late sleepers of the city.

Australia is also the home of many online casinos where casino enthusiasts can play into the late hours of the night. As these games are global and don’t have any limits to their accessibility, players can play different online pokies in Australia without limits. In a land casino, for example, game tables and slot machines would close at different times, according to different factors, but these online versions of games don’t require any staff intervention, and so are available to play all the time.

While every cafe in Sydney has a different opening and closing time, they are always open during corporate hours. The question is, which ones are the best to work at in the city?

Industry Beans, York Street

The coffee giant Industry Beans on York Street is a popular place to work in Sydney, but that doesn’t make it any less good. Industry Beans has a delicious brunch menu and a cool and clean vibe which makes it perfect for working. If you download the Industry Beans Cafe App you can order ahead or order straight from your table to avoid losing concentration on your work.

If you order ahead, you can even earn points on the app which can contribute towards your coffee and food purchases. The seasonal menu will mean you will never get bored of the delicious brunch food on offer, and you can switch it up per season. Coffee specialties are available to order, including the intriguing Bubble Coffee, which yes, does resemble bubble tea. Maybe it’s perfect for a midday treat?

Paramount Coffee Project, Surry Hills

This walk-in cafe located in Surry Hills is open from 7 am to 4 pm and boasts very fast Wi-Fi for you speedy workers and an extensive all-day menu. On this cafe’s menu available all day are a range of foods including a selection of brunch foods, toast, scrambled egg on toast, and the highly recommended banana and walnut bread. Food prices range from $4 to $31, so food is very affordable.

Also on the menu is an extensive selection of coffees, shakes, smoothies, and tea. After the finish, there is even wine, beer, and cocktails on the menu, perfect for a day with an early finish!

Ampersand Cafe and Bookstore, Paddington, New South Wales

Ampersand is a little different addition to our list, as this place is a cafe and a bookstore. It has over 30,000 books to read which can be enjoyed during your lunch break, and has 3 floors, so storage space and finding a seat are never a worry! All-day breakfasts are also on the menu, as are a range of fresh salads, and nice desserts for that afternoon pick-me-up.

In regards to workability, Ampersand has been rated highly by freelancers out there. On the top floor at the back, there is a coworking table which is perfect for group working sections or casual meetings. The chairs are comfy and the cafe gives off an old, antique vibe and has 3 floors suited to everyone’s working style. The second floor is for those who like a bit of background noise, the first floor is for a dark and moody space, and the third floor is for those who desire quiet as they type. Either way, Ampersand provides a relaxing vibe with a large menu. Just don’t expect it to be cheap, because it is above average for the area. Still, we think the charming scholarly vibe makes up for it.

Black Sugar Coffee Company, Telstra Building, New South Wales

Having made guides for the best cafes in other hardworking cities like Singapore, we just couldn’t resist adding yet another cafe that offers locally roasted beans and a coworking space. Black Sugar Coffee offers a cool and modern interior with access to power outlets and supposedly some of the fastest Wi-Fi in the city. According to some reviewers online, the ultra-fast internet reaches up to 79 megabits per second!

Aside from the fast Wi-Fi, the main appeal of Black Sugar is the all-day menu, which offers both breakfast and lunch food. We recommend the Summer Porridge complete with oats, milk, honey, cinnamon, berry compote, mango, and toasted coconut. As for coffee, the freshly brewed options are pretty standard however, you do get a few different options. A piccolo, aka a “baby latte”, a ristretto shot and milk, and a batch brewed coffee.

If you’re searching for something more, you can order something healthy and homemade like banana bread, or orange and almond cake. Black Sugar is also very understanding of major allergens including gluten and dairy, so you won’t be unable to enjoy a sweet treat here!
