The Spice Island –  Zanzibar, Tanzania

Ok, so Zanzibar is already a bucket list destination. It’s actually a lot more than just a beach destination—it’s a whole sensory journey! Imagine wandering through a bustling spice market, the air thick with the scent of cloves, cinnamon, and vanilla…That’s Zanzibar.

When you arrive, Stone Town is a good starting point. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a labyrinth of narrow alleys and historic buildings with carved wooden doors, which tell tales of centuries gone by.

Now, picture yourself on Nungwi Beach. White sand stretches endlessly under your feet, and the turquoise waters invite you to dive in. But there’s more than lounging to be done here! You could join a dhow boat trip, try snorkeling in the clear waters, or visit the nearby Mnemba Atoll (a diver’s dream).

Before you finish up your trip, taking a spice tour to discover the island’s agricultural bounty is a must. Follow it up with a fresh seafood dinner to get a taste of how delicious the island’s spices truly are.

The Dream Archipelago – Seychelles

Seychelles is the kind of place that feels like it’s been waiting for you. With 115 islands scattered in the Indian Ocean, if you haven’t considered island hopping before, this is the perfect destination to begin. Start with Mahé, where you can hike the lush Morne Seychellois National Park in the morning and still have time to relax on Beau Vallon Beach by afternoon.

The island of La Digue offers a different pace that’s slower and more intimate. It’s certainly ideal for a romantic trip for two, but you can get just as much out of a trip here flying solo. Rent a bicycle and pedal your way to Anse Source d’Argent. With its granite boulders and shallow, warm waters, this beach  is one of the most photographed in the world.

Seychelles isn’t all about lazing around, though. Dive into the crystal-clear waters and explore vibrant coral reefs. Did you know that Seychelles is home to one of the largest coral atolls in the world, the Aldabra Atoll? Meanwhile, if you’ve got the budget to afford a luxe vacation, you’ll find your very own retreat on one of the private island resorts—which also offer a side of eco-consciousness with their premier accommodations.

A Coastal Adventure in Algoa Bay

South Africa’s Eastern Cape often gets overshadowed by Cape Town and the Garden Route, but Algoa Bay is worth a visit. This stretch of coastline near Port Elizabeth is also a must for nature lovers. Have you ever seen dolphins surfing the waves right in front of you?

The beaches here are long and inviting, perfect for a morning stroll or an afternoon of sunbathing. But there’s more to do than just soak up the sun. Take a boat trip to see the local marine life, including dolphins, whales, and even penguins. Yes, penguins in Africa! St. Croix Island is home to the largest breeding colony of African penguins in the world.

For a different kind of adventure, explore the nearby Addo Elephant National Park. It’s one of the best places in South Africa to see elephants up close.

Evenings here are laid back and in keeping with the bay’s low key vibe. Spoil yourself with fresh seafood at a local restaurant and try to get in an evening stroll across the beach if you can. Nothing beats hearing the sound of the ocean to feel like you’ve truly escaped the hustle and bustle of day to day life.

Tips for Travel

Admittedly, Africa isn’t just around the corner for every traveler reading this article, so I thought I’d share a mini survival guide for traveling here. Firstly, it’s advisable to book your flights and accommodation in advance and read up on when the best time to travel is, since Africa is a huge continent and each country has its own ideal season.

It’s also worth thinking about how you’re going to survive the actual journey itself, since long haul flights aren’t exactly a breeze. I advise packing your laptop or a tablet, as a minimum. With a strong data connection, you can take advantage of a whole host of digital entertainment that will see you through the flights and other travel in no time.

For instance, did you know that online gaming is now a huge global industry, with more genres than ever before? In the virtual realm, you can find everything from competitive eSports tournaments to join, to real money online casino games, with platforms like PokerStars Casino bringing classic variants and verticals bang up to date—à la its online roulette selection. If casino gaming isn’t your thing, even streaming sites like Netflix have gotten in on the gaming act.

Alternatively, add some choice audiobooks to your Audible account. Or maximize that Spotify premium subscription by listening to a wealth of podcasts, audiobooks and, of course, the latest (or oldest) offerings from your favorite artist. Try to resist Toto’s ‘Africa’, though!
