Experiencing the thrill of adventure or a dip into the unknown doesn’t require expensive equipment nor demand an on-foot hike through wilderness. Many of the world’s most exciting locations can be reached by road, from the hauntingly beautiful wilderness of north Alaska to ancient Incan cities in Peru. Quite apart from being the hallmark of where urban development has taken hold, cars can, in some cases, create the opportunity for incredible adventures that would be impossible otherwise.
Going the distance
The primary benefit that car-based travel provides on adventures is flexibility and security. Whereas going by foot or other types of transport can limit the amount of equipment you take and therefore the ambition of any given route, a car provides a mobile rest stop that can help you to get to your destination sooner. Furthermore, as self-sufficient car repairs guru ChicMoto.com explains, repairing your vehicle can be straightforward and not require the use of specialists. Some of these vehicles will do great for the sometimes bumpy and rugged areas that adventure travel provides; for instance, US News report that the majority of car enthusiasts recommend a range of semis, including the Chevrolet Silverado and Subaru Outback, which lend themselves to adventure travel.
Some places are better by car
While any area of the world may be reached by foot, some are better experienced by car. Take the beautiful and rugged Torres del Paine, which reaches over 1,800 square km in size. While trekking the area is absolutely possible, and necessary for some summits, the huge area of the region means that car travel is a great option. Furthermore, the region has notoriously eclectic weather conditions that can cause disruption to any trip, adventure activities included. A car provides the necessary respite to ward off poor weather conditions and to continue your trip.

As well, places like America beckon to be explored by car. The landscapes of the Southwest are some of the most unique in the world and there’s no better way to see it than by road tripping. Follow my perfect two week southwest itinerary that stops at all the highlights including Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon, Moab, Canyonlands, Death Valley, and Joshua Tree.
Experiencing nature
Many of the world’s best adventure areas also have bountiful wildlife to spot and experience. Torres del Paine is famous for its alpaca and puma; and many of the countries that can be traversed by road in sub-Saharan Africa are blessed with wildlife, too. Traveling by car gives you the opportunity to experience wildlife, first hand, with safety, and without needing to follow the prescribed routes offered by safari tour companies.

A great example of this is Uganda’s Apoka Lodge, located 400 miles from Kampala. As the absolute most remote property in Africa, it can be reached by car and licenses obtained to enjoy the National Park and explore it on your own terms. On the way, your use of a car will allow you to experience the rich diversity of flora and fauna in the country – as well as the thrilling scenery.
An adventure holiday need not be conducted as a backpacking vacation. The use of a car will enable you to enjoy yourself in great comfort and, in some cases, reach areas that you simply would not be able to without the vehicle. Consider going by motor for your next adventure.
